When we last saw diviner Alex Verus, he had been tricked into anassault on one of the the White Council's most secure facilities
where a number of "imbued items" were stolen. The fact that his
boss, Morden, was charged and imprisoned as a result of that debacle
makes Verus's position on the Junior Council, which he holds only
by virtue of being Senior Councilor Morden's aide particularly
tenuous. This is worse than awkward, since being on the council
in the first place is the only thing holding a death warrant in
abeyance. (Not that plenty of people aren't trying to kill him
anyway).
Regardless, Verus is working to recover the missing items, though
his motives are mixed at best. In the meantime, something magically
odd is going on with Ann, the woman he loves (though he is almost
comically unable to say so, as he finally admits in a long aside),
and that can't be good. Not to mention that he now has a personal
prophecy of doom to deal with...
I like Alex; I like this series, but it seems to me that we have
had enough "middle books". I am ready for Alex to stop getting
deeper and deeper underneath everybody stepping on him and for he
and his friends to start taking names and directing well earned
wallops towards certain posteriors.

The intrigue deepens and the characters grow. Best of all it all happens in service to character as well as plot. Even Alex's nemeses on the council feel like they've become more well rounded as individuals. Not nicer or anywhere near rooting for but they're not cartoon villains. Most amazing is how much Alex succeeds over this series despite being the weakest mage featured and it all makes sense. Anyone on the fence buy this because it's the best installment yet!
I started reading the Alex Verus series several years after I discovered Jim Butcher's Dresden books. I found similarities and differences, but over time, I've come to appreciate Mr. Jacka's nuanced style. His characters deal with many of the same conflicts and issues, fundamental human experiences in a fantasy setting. They are invested with the same hopes and fears we all face, and their powers (and sometimes lack there of) aren't a magical solution. Very entertaining, good action, and a lot of heart in the writing. I highly recommend all of his books.
Finally some joy for Alex and Anne! This book was fantastic, just like all the other books, it had a great plot it move forward at a steady pace with wonderful Magic and fully realized characters, but I really liked that Benedict finally dug into the nebulous relationship between Alex and Ann. They deserve to have some type of a, not happy ending, but a happy in between. It is about time, and I think that they can tackle whatever comes their way. Wonderful way to pull the story forward and I love that Alex is on the council and tackling the bigger problems now. I cannot wait to read the next installment of this wonderful series! One of my absolute favorites! Keep them coming!
I have been a fan of this series since discovering it three books in, which means I wait anxiously for the next title to drop, which fortunately one does every year! Alex Verus continues to get in more and more hot water and MARKED supplied some surprising twists. Plus there was a dragon and a jinn (one being maybe not so helpful as hoped, the other causing jinn sized trouble). If I were Alex, I'd have needed a large gin and tonic as this episode came to a close -- and I don't drink gin!
It isn't easy continuing to up the ante and entertain (and hold) a reading audience, but Benedict Jacka is holding his own and continues to supply an upgrade in suspense and danger and deviousity as a mage with Alex's talents has to be very creative to take on and best more powerful magic slingers.
Definite kudos for a great new installment in the Alex Verus universe, Mr. Jacka. Will be alert for the new pre-order opportunity on the next volume.
I enjoyed this one and im looking forward to the next. I liked the ending . I hope they stay together and are stronger for it. To many of there enemies can black mail them now . If it goes that way they are done for Can't wait to see what happens next . Thinking Alex needs a power level upgrade. Not more then he can handle but something that can give him an advantage against heavy hitters. I like him better as a fixer with real authority that wins even with the odds stacked against him. Better then him as a fugitive on the run. I recommend the whole series and hope there will be many more

Marked is the 9th book in the Alex Verus series, and Alex is still going strong. Alex is on the council of Light Mages, and it's still a difficult uphill climb dealing with the light mages, especially after the incident that happened at the end of Bound.
Alex is put in charge of gathering the artifacts that were stolen, and he is learning the old adage of "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" being stuck having to deal with Onyx and still trying to figure out what Drahk is pulling, and why he wanted the artifacts in the first place.
Along with dealing with a very polarized council, Alex is trying to figure out Morden’s game while being locked up.
Alex and Anne are the main focus of this book, along with dealing with the council and the artifacts, Alex is put in a situation where he needs to confront "Evil Anne" and help Anne realize that she needs her dark side to help balance her out, despite Anne locking "Evil Anne" away a long time ago. This is in a world were dark and light mages are both good and evil. The two main protagonists are in a world where their very survival is at stake.
The way this left off, there really needs to be a 10th book.
