This book should be reprinted, or at the very least there should be a Kindle version. I sat in Abraham Kaplan's lectures, from which this book was taken, in Royce Hall in UCLA, and later I took advanced courses in Philosophy from him. I believe I have never met a philosopher so able to present and discuss ideas with a rare combination of wit, clarity, and development of context. All these come through in this book. I last saw Abraham Kaplan at San Francisco International Airport in a chance meeting, in 1967. I believe he was on his way to Israel although I am not certain of that. Only recently I found I had lost my copy of this book and had to order a used copy from Amazon. I was very unhappy to find it apparently is no longer in print. For anyone interested in pursuing the philosophical quest, or simply in having a better understanding of the multiple and sometimes conflicting ideas that have shaped culture and society, this is a must read.Tags : The New World of Philosophy [Abraham Kaplan] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I read and reread this book when I first became interested in Philosophy. Kaplan looks at various schools of Philosophy, starting with Pragmatism going through Logical Analysis and Existensialism and provides a clear and highly readable introduction to each area of thought. He also includes sections on Indian Philosophy, Buddhism, Chinese Thought. Kaplan has a real mastery of the ideas and problems of each school of Philosophy he surveys.
Picking up recently and rereading certain passages I have been reminded of what an outstanding work it is.
This book is a collection of lectures regarding modern philosophy and should be seen more as an anthology than as a unified work.
Most of the lectures cover specific schools of thought regarding philosophy (analytical philosophy, existentialism, pragmatism, Zen, Vedanta), but there are also some others as well. For example, the discussion of the impact of Freud on philosophy is interesting, as is the attempt to address Communism in philosophical terms.
Throughout the book, Kaplan demonstrates a gift of making difficult-to-understand concepts easy to grasp. His survey of each area is quite deep and yet extremely accessible. He attempts to describe almost every school of thought in its own terms and provide a voice for it (the exception is Communism, where he seems more interested in looking philosophically at propaganda methods).
This is an extraordinarily clear work. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
A Classic that holds up with time. I first used it as a text in the 60's. Reordered it when I heard an Alan Watts talk on Abraham Kaplan.
an excellent overview of different fields of philosophy from existentialism, to analytic philosophy, to pscyoanalysis and buddhism. Well written and insightful. His best book and the best overview of different philosophical schools or approaches to philosophy. Reads as if it were written in the 1990s.
