Seriously though, A.R.A. is Robbins' first novel and one of his best, easily. Read it. Then read it again. Then pass it along so others can read it.
This book is absurd. It is profound. It is concrete and abstract at times beyond my ability to comprehend. At the same time there is woven into the analysis of everything scientific, religious, social, economic and romantic a story line I found it easy to place myself personally into. The man doesn't think outside of the box because his mind works on a different plane. I was an English lit major, but this is a completely new genre for me. I'm hooked.
I've Just read this book for the second time since it was published in 1971. It's a fact that Tom Robbins heralds the dangers of organized (disorganized?) anything. (He might make an exception for music.) He's been characterized as a dangerous man and as a national treasure. I'm impressed that a book written more than 40 years ago could have been written yesterday as it is still in touch with our times. Tom Robbins' books are worth reading and re reading.
This was a gift for my grandson who is into the retro arena. I loved this crazy book when i read it several years ago. It is not everyone's taste but it is thought provoking and funny.
I read this book years ago, right after I read Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and loved it. Tom Robbins ability to weave together social and political issues into an incredibly humorous and thought provoking science fiction format ranks him as one of my favorite authors. I love his off the wall sense of humor that frequently illicits up front and out loud laughter when I am reading one of his boooks, With the exception of his last two books, I have read them all and it is difficult to qualify one of them as my favorite although Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Jitterbug Perfume and Skinny Legs and All come to mind as ones that I hated to see end. I purchased this copy of Another Roadside Attraction as a gift for my son and hope that he will enjoy it as muc as I did when I first read it. If not, I will read it again myself.
Perhaps you have read all of Tom Robbins's other works and this, his very first novel, is the lone remainder. Of course you will read it, but don't expect it to stand up to his high-water novels (Still Life, Cowgirls, Jitterbug, etc.). In ARA, Robbins is still developing his acerbic narrative voice. He has not yet mastered the imagery and language so quintessentially "Robbins".

That said, ARA delivers a valuable literary accomplishment as a work that encapsulates the texture and sensibilities of the most idealized elements of Sixties counter-culture, much as Kerouac did for an earlier generation. Just remember it takes Time.
Overall this story is a bit strange, if you decide to read it I would say do so with an open mind. There are so many small anecdotal parts in the book that make this story a must read. The story of Tarzan talking to Jesus is incredible. Through a fictitious scenario the author raises important philosophical points and a type of evolution of religion, in such a striking way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but like I said, definitely pursue this book with an open mind. I feel this book can have a powerful impact on a person's mind, and for me this book emphasized that truth is really in the way things are perceived.
