An Unsuitable Duchess edition by Carolyn Jewel Romance eBooks

(3.5 stars) This is a 132-page novella previously published in an anthology (Don't know which one. Sorry.) but I had never read it. Since I consider Carolyn Jewel to be a good writer of HRs, it seemed worth downloading.

Lately I haven't been super fond of HR novellas. Most of them, including those by Anna Campbell, a former favorite author of mine, lack any sexual tension because the H and h are having sex by the halfway point of the story or even earlier. No tension there at all and the only conflict the stories present are 1) does he/she love me or just lust after me, and 2) will they agree to marry by the end. And considering that these are all romances, that's not really much of a conflict for the reader, just a bit of a pain in the patootie to have to read.

So...I'm happy to report that there was actual sexual chemistry and sexual tension in Jewel's story and no sex until more than 70% in. And Jewel does a good job of getting the attraction across on paper and so I enjoyed the relationship of H and h. And who are they? H is Stoke, the very reserved, straitlaced Duke of Stoke Teversault, and the h is Georgina Lark, a young widow with a lively, extroverted personality.

Stoke was attracted to George before she married but she got snapped up by Mr. Lark (forgot his first name, sorry) before Stoke had a chance to act on it. Now George and her sister are at a small house party at his estate. Stoke's brother Lord William, who was a good friend of George's late husband is also there. Not much happens in the story. It is a house party, after all. But, of course, Stoke must break through his reserve and George must work past her belief that he disapproves of her. Some issues with William, with guest Lord Revers, and with George's sister round out the story.

It's a 3-4 star story because there is that ubiquitous miscommunication thing going on between Stoke and George about their true relationship. Is it lust or is it love? But, fortunately, this was a novella so that didn't drag on for too long. I'm rounding to 4 stars because I do appreciate Jewel's writing abilities.

Great story
Lots of romance
Now a widow, Georgina and her sister visit the home of the Duke of Stokes. George is attracted to the Duke and eventually he gives in to his obsession and seduces her. A nice flow to the story with one stiff uptight Duke who finally meets his match.
